UCT has 'best value for money MBA' in world

Talent Pool Editor, 16 March 2009

The UCT Graduate School of Business full-time MBA programme has been ranked as the best value for money MBA in the world in the latest Financial Times (FT) of London's Global MBA Top 100 Ranking released in January.

The UCT GSB remains the only business school in Africa in the FT MBA Top 100, and this is the fifth consecutive year that the School has featured in the rankings. It holds the same spot in the ranking as it did last year (71st).

In addition to being the top-rated value for money MBA, there are other notable improvements for the UCT GSB in 2009 - the School was ranked 15th in the Career Progress category, 7th in the International Mobility of MBA graduates category and 4th in the International Experience category.

An evaluation of the 2009 rankings table shows that the UCT GSB again ranks amongst the top five business schools based in BRICS emergent markets - Brazil, Russia, India and China and South Africa.

"The UCT GSB is delighted with this Top 100 ranking for the fifth consecutive year - it testifies to the high quality of our programmes and the exceptional quality of our MBA in particular," said Professor Frank Horwitz, Director of the UCT GSB.

Professor Horwitz added that being ranked as the best value for money MBA in the world shows that the UCT MBA is very competitively priced internationally for the high quality it delivers.

"This will help us attract greater numbers of international students in the future. Typically, business school enrolment numbers are counter-cyclical - when there is an economic downturn, business schools see increased enrolments. The UCT GSB is extremely well placed to capitalise on this trend and attract a greater share of the global MBA market," he said.

Horwitz said that it was pleasing to see the UCT GSB and its reputation continuing to rise and that this is reflected in the fact that the 2009 MBA numbers at the UCT GSB have met the School's targets, with the business school attracting increased applications for this year.

According to Lance Stringer, MBA Director at the UCT GSB, the School has been particularly excited at the interest shown in its MBA from people from the rest of Africa.

"Together with the high percentage of other international participants on the MBA each year, we believe we have one of the most internationally diverse MBAs in the country. The importance of this for ensuring our students attain an MBA that is globally relevant and recognised cannot be underestimated," he said.

Horwitz said that it was also positive to hear that UCT GSB graduates are doing very well all over the world.

"This can be seen in the three strong rankings in International Experience, International Mobility and Career Progress. These three categories are closely related and confirm that our graduates are highly valued in the international market."

"In dollar-weighted terms our alumni are earning at the top of the table, just behind the likes of INSEAD, London Business School and Stern and ahead of the likes of UCLA, Yale, Oxford and Cambridge."

At the top of the 2009 FT rankings Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania retained its top place but now holds the number one ranking with London Business School. Harvard Business School has moved up to third and Columbia Business School and INSEAD round out the top five.
