Overview: The Shoprite Group of Companies

The Shoprite Group of Companies, Africa's largest food retailer, operates more than a 1000 corporate and more than 280 franchise outlets in 17 countries across Africa, the Indian Ocean Islands and southern Asia. The Company's head quarters are situated in the Western Cape province of South Africa. Shoprite Holdings Ltd is a public company listed on the JSE Limited, with secondary listings on both the Namibian and Zambian Stock Exchanges. Its ownership therefore lies in the hands of its almost 5 000 shareholders. The Group is continuing its implementation of a strategic expansion programme to maintain its position as the leading food retailer on the African continent.

Currently, more than 190 corporate outlets serve consumers in the 16 countries where we operate outside of South Africa. In each of these countries (Angola, Botswana, Ghana, India, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Swaziland, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe) Shoprite created world-class supermarkets.

Since November 2004 Shoprite has enjoyed representation beyond the African continent with the opening of a Shoprite Wholesale operation and a Franchise business under the Shoprite brand in India. Shoprite Hyper Mulund is the first franchisee to open in Mumbai and the Shoprite Group the first South African retailer to penetrate the Indian subcontinent.

Expansion beyond the borders of South Africa is an essential development for the Shoprite Group of Companies as the potential for more large supermarkets in the country has almost reached saturation point. Shoprite has furthermore always supported the idea of the African Renaissance and we believe our successes in Africa show the way for others to make this Renaissance a reality.

The Group actively empowers small local suppliers in virtually all the countries in which it does business in Africa for the delivery of a range of items, mainly fresh produce and perishable products. Most of these suppliers initially need assistance to meet the Group's requirements in terms of volumes and product specifications. To bring them to the required standard, the Group operates extensive support and development programmes aimed at assisting them to achieve the required standards and produce to our needs.

By opening stores across the continent, the Shoprite Group of Companies is also assisting with the upliftment programmes of other countries in Africa as we create both job and skills development opportunities. The Company currently provides employment to more than 8 500 local nationals in its non-South African operations.
